Dying of cancer because of Mom?
In Minnesota right now there is a mother who may well be sentencing her son to death because of her beliefs. Colleen Hauser is the mother of 13-year-old Daniel Hauser who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in January of 2009. Her son received one chemotherapy treatment and Ms. Hauser has since refused to allow her son to have treatment. She states that they are using nutrition and water with a higher pH to “alkalize” the body. Ms. Hauser asserts membership in an American Indian religious organization called Nemenhah, though they don't claim to be Indians/Native Americans.
Ms. Hauser has been quoted in several articles that she learned about the alternative healing techniques "on the Internet.'' She reports that she believes that her son "is getting better" contrary to all medical evidence.
Part of being a mother is knowing that there are times that the needs of your children have to surpass your own. For centuries mothers have put their needs aside to make sure that their children have everything they need. Mothers have skipped meals, scrimped and saved every dime, postponed their own medical care in order to provide for their children.
Every parent I know who has fought cancer has shared gratitude that it was they and not their child who was ill. I would go through any possible treatment if it means that they don't have to.
Ms. Hauser has every right to choose any type of treatment or no treatment at all when she is ill. Daniel Hauser is 13 years old, not old enough to drink, marry, drive, not even old enough to get a learner's permit. The decision about this young mans life and future now lie in the hands of Judge John Rodenberg. Let's hope that he has the wisdom to make a decision that his mother is unwilling or unable to make.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY. Am just making my presence felt, my friend.
Thanks for the insightful post. It is interestingly innovative. May I be so privileged to follow your every post? I have been dropping your EC. Hope you're in the best of health.
Just wow. I can guarantee you no herbs or diet would have saved my life when I was sick with Hodgkin's. No, and when I read things about it or had someone encourage me to just "change my diet" it angered me because they may as well have told me to die. I feel this boy's pain and I hope the right decision is made soon.
I have a family member who is into all that ph crap and refused to give treatment to her husband suffering from dementia and Alzheimers. I could not stand to watch it so my husband and I dove in and are now the medical powers of atty. for this older family member.
It has been a lot taking care of him while taking care of my own cancer too - but worth every minute of it to make sure that our dear loved one who is suffering from illness has access to medication and doctors.
It will be a loss to all if the Judge in the case you described sets a precedent in favor of the mother.

Miracles happen. What she is doing could be that miracle happening. My own journey as well as the journey of others that I have shared has me open minded and open hearted. I am sending them both my best thoughts ...
Have you read the journey?
Best to you, Viveca
This is a touchy situation. I believe this mother loves her child and is doing what she thinks is right for him. Unfortunately it might be the wrong decision and it might cost her her son's life. Hopefully this judge will intervene and help her see the light. Thanks for the post and I pray this young boy will recover from this dreadful illness.

@ viveca - No I've not read the journey, please share more information so I can investigate it.
@Eddie I agree with your opinion. While Mom may well think she is doing the right thing I desperately hope the judge will step in and assist this young man.
Sandi - Thanks for your comment, I'm a big fan of your blog, congrats on the good news!
Hi,
I pray that the boy gets medical treatment and that the judge can help him to survive and get over this cancer. I don't think the mom is thinking clearly. I'm sure she loves her son, but he needs hospital care. Thanks for sharing this story with us.
I am not saying that I agree with her refusal to treat or the paradigm behind her "natural" treatments.
However, I did notice in the article that the bill for the first round of chemo was almost $100,000. Does anyone know if they have health insurance and, if they do, how much of that was still out of pocket costs?
I am just floored by some people...I mean isn't it a parents job to go above and beyond all possibilities to protect their child? I would think a mother would try Everything to save her child...alternative and traditional...aren't there laws about this?
