4 ways to decrease your BPA exposure

BPA is a political hot issue and has left many people wondering exactly what they are supposed to do about it. At this time avoiding BPA altogether is incredibly difficult but there are some things you can do to decrease your exposure.

  1. Don't nuke your plastic. Heat and wear on plastics increases the leaching of chemicals.
  2. Check the plastics that your kids are using. Baby bottles and sippy cups are more likely to have CPA. Look around your kitchen for plastics with the #7 mark on them and replace them with glass, stainless steel, or BPA free versions.
  3. Consider your canned goods. While not all cans have BPA in the lining finding out which ones don't isn't easy as they are not clearly marked in the U.S. Fresh or frozen foods are BPA free.
  4. Check your canning. If you are canning fruits and vegetables on your own be aware that the lids used for canning have BPA. Make sure you store them upright and leave enough head room and the exposure will remain low.
If you want to work with others to decrease the toxins in our environment get involved with groups like the Breast Cancer Fund.

On Friday, I posted an entry on my blog about how to maintain a cancer diet without going whole hog lola granola whack job. Part of my diet means purchasing foods that will limit my exposure to BPA when possible. Another way I try to do it is to buy in glass jars rather than cans when the choice is available - olives, artichoke hearts, peanut butter...
